Nakaseke Land Dispute: Residents Rendered Homeless Amidst Demolitions

Residents of Kiwoko Town Council in Nakaseke District are reeling from the destruction of their homes and crops, leaving them without shelter. The demolitions are reportedly linked to a land dispute over a 32-acre property, with accusations leveled against land broker Yasin Kayongo and three individuals connected to the estate of the late Isaac Bbunza.
Families claim they were forcibly evicted from the land, which has been their home. The contested property is said to be part of the late Bbunza’s estate, but a man identified as Bikajumbe, who allegedly claims descent from the late Namirembe, has also laid claim to the land along with two others. This group, residents allege, hired Kayongo to carry out the evictions.
Officials from the Nakaseke Resident District Commissioner’s office, including Deputy RDC Sarah Nakitende, met with affected residents and concerned parties. State House Principal Legal Officer Annet Bakunzi and representatives from the Police Land Protection Unit were also present. During the meeting, residents expressed their fear and desperation, describing how their houses were destroyed, leaving them with nowhere to go.
Members of the Bbunza family have publicly challenged Bikajumbe’s claim, stating he has no legitimate connection to the family and is working with relatives to intimidate occupants. The validity of the eviction documents presented by Kayongo and Bikajumbe came under scrutiny from Ms. Bakunzi, who questioned their authenticity and whether they specifically authorized the eviction of the current residents. Kayongo stated the documents originated from the Area Land Committee, a claim requiring further verification.
While a site visit was proposed, residents argued it wouldn’t resolve the underlying legal issues. The meeting concluded with officials agreeing to conduct further investigations into the presented documents before reconvening. The local Mayor has condemned the alleged use of forged documents and called for government intervention to aid the displaced residents.
