President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has called upon the people of Karamoja to strike a balance between preserving their rich cultural heritage and embracing modern development. Speaking at the 11th Karamoja Cultural Festival in Moroto District, the President emphasized that culture should serve as a foundation for progress rather than an impediment.

“Culture is our anchor, but progress is our path forward,” Museveni stated, urging the community to “audit” their traditions. He encouraged the retention of values that strengthen families and communities, citing discipline and strong family structures as contributing factors to Karamoja’s relatively low HIV/AIDS prevalence.

However, he also advised against clinging to traditions that impede social and economic transformation. The President specifically encouraged a shift away from nomadic lifestyles towards more productive and wealth-generating economic activities. “You cannot remain moving with cattle from one place to another forever. We must use our land productively,” he asserted.

Museveni lauded the Karamojong for their support of the government’s disarmament program, recognizing the role women played in recovering over 41,000 illegal firearms, which he stated was crucial for restoring peace and security.

The festival, themed “Unity in Culture, Strength in Peace, Prosperity Through Tourism and Natural Resources,” aims to celebrate the heritage of the wider Ateker cluster. President Museveni sees this as an opportunity for Karamoja to leverage its unique culture and natural resources, including its proximity to national parks, to boost tourism and create wealth.

His message underscored the importance of integrating cultural identity with modernization, ensuring that heritage becomes a catalyst for a more prosperous future for the region.
