Lyantonde District on High Alert Over Suspected Measles Outbreak Affecting 85 Children

Health authorities in Lyantonde District have sounded an alarm following a surge in severe measles cases, with 85 children receiving treatment at local health facilities over the last month. District Health Officer Dr. Moses Nkanika highlighted that most affected children had not been vaccinated against the disease, leading to a significant increase in measles-related illnesses.

“In just one month, 85 children have passed through our health facilities because of severe measles. We have established that most of the children affected are those who were not vaccinated,” Dr. Nkanika stated during a stakeholders’ meeting aimed at addressing the escalating situation. The rapid spread has raised particular concern within schools, prompting the district to plan a comprehensive vaccination drive.

The planned vaccination campaign will target children aged between nine months and five years, aiming to curb the outbreak’s spread. School proprietors have expressed anxieties about the disease transmission within educational institutions and subsequently to families. Some proprietors also voiced reservations regarding the vaccination exercise, citing past reports of adverse reactions and requesting clear information and authorization documentation for the program.

District leaders are emphasizing the importance of public health over individual beliefs, with Lyantonde District Chairperson Moses Ali Ssemanda stating that community health will not be compromised. The district is also working to monitor population movements, given concerns about unidentified individuals settling in the area, which could complicate disease control efforts.

A mass vaccination exercise is scheduled from October 1 to October 5 for children aged nine months to five years. Officials are urging parents to cooperate with the initiative, underscoring vaccination as a crucial preventive measure against measles and its complications.
