Jane Asiimwe was merely 18 and a first-year student at Makerere University when she first crossed paths with Kansiime Mukama Taremwa. Their initial meeting in April 2021, en route to a fellowship, marked the beginning of a connection that neither anticipated would lead to marriage.
What blossomed was a deep friendship, a bond so strong that even as romantic feelings began to emerge, they often referred to each other as ‘friend’. This period of transition was characterized by a cautious exploration of their evolving relationship, ensuring their solid foundation of trust and support remained intact.
“There were many occasions when we would say in a conversation, ‘I would like to talk to my friend,’ because we were still figuring out the romantic aspect, but we knew the friendship was solid, and we could count on each other no matter what,” Jane recalls.
Their courtship spanned approximately four years, a period where the exact moment their friendship tipped into romance remains a delightful ambiguity. This gradual development allowed their love to grow organically, eventually leading them from the university halls to the altar.
Their story highlights how profound connections can develop from simple beginnings, growing through understanding and mutual respect, and standing the test of time and evolving emotions.
