The Ministry of Health has issued a strong call to action for pregnant women across Uganda, urging them to meticulously attend all scheduled antenatal care appointments. This proactive approach, coupled with strict adherence to prescribed medications, is highlighted as a crucial strategy in reducing the incidence of preventable birth complications.

Dr. Moses Muwanga, Assistant Commissioner for Palliative Care at the Ministry of Health, elaborated on the benefits during a recent handover ceremony at Masaka Regional Referral Hospital. He stressed that regular antenatal check-ups and consistent medication intake are vital for improving both maternal and newborn health outcomes. “Women of childbearing age and expectant mothers should be cautious and take all medicines prescribed during all their antenatal visits because some of these complications and disabilities can be reduced, and we reduce the number of children born with some of these complications,” Dr. Muwanga stated.

His remarks were made as the Ministry, in collaboration with partners like the Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association Uganda (SHAU), donated 20 wheelchairs to children with conditions such as spina bifida and hydrocephalus. The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to providing assistive devices to individuals with disabilities and encouraged parents to seek assessments and support at regional referral hospitals for children with such conditions.

Mr. Robert Mpanga, Principal Administrator of Masaka Regional Referral Hospital, commended the initiative, noting that the wheelchairs would significantly improve the mobility and quality of life for children with disabilities, aiding their access to education and social services. Parents expressed their gratitude for the support, acknowledging the positive impact the wheelchairs would have on their families’ ability to access essential services.

This concerted effort underscores the Ministry’s dedication to maternal and child health, emphasizing that consistent engagement with healthcare providers throughout pregnancy is paramount.
