Grief and fear have descended upon Kitwe Cell in Rwentuuha Town Council, Bushenyi District, after the body of 34-year-old Justina Sandres was found on Thursday morning. Sandres, also known locally as Nakate, ran a popular bar and waragi depot in the area.

Residents who discovered the body reported that Sandres appeared to have been sexually assaulted and strangled, with blood observed coming from her mouth and eyes. The scene was described as harrowing by Hawa Owoyesigiire, a neighboring business owner who was among the first on site. “I found her when she was naked and as if she was gang raped and strangled to death,” Owoyesigiire recounted.

The LC1 Chairman of Kitwe Cell, Naboth Kasingye, confirmed he was alerted by the plantation owner and subsequently reported the incident to the Rwentuuha Police Station. He noted that this marks the fourth such incident in the area this year. Kasingye expressed concern over the prevalence of bars operating beyond permitted hours, suggesting a link between excessive alcohol consumption and increased violence.

This sentiment was echoed by LC5 Councillor for Rwentuuha Town Council, Frank Muhumuza, who stated that “such murders are expected because when people are drunk they fight each other.” He stressed that security is a collective responsibility and highlighted the issue of establishments not adhering to closing times.

Bushenyi police, aided by a K9 unit, secured the scene and arrested eight suspects who are assisting with the ongoing investigation. The body has been transported to Kitagata Hospital for a postmortem examination. As of reporting, police had not yet released an official statement, and investigations are continuing.
