Businessman Convicted, Sentenced to Pay Shs300M for Land Fraud

Masaka Chief Magistrate’s Court has handed down a significant ruling against businessman Amos Mwesigye, ordering him to pay Shs300 million in compensation for a fraudulent land transaction. Mwesigye was found guilty of obtaining money by false pretence, a charge stemming from a land deal that occurred in 2020.

According to the prosecution, Mwesigye, along with some family members of the late Nasanairi Kinalwa, allegedly misrepresented ownership of a 120-acre piece of land located in Gomba District. They are accused of falsely claiming rights to the land despite not being the rightful proprietors.

Steven Kagyenyi, the victim in this case, reportedly paid Mwesigye Shs300 million for 60 acres of the disputed land. However, Mwesigye did not possess the legal right to sell this portion, having misrepresented his ownership claims.

Chief Magistrate Biwaga Selsa convicted Mwesigye, sentencing him to a fine of Shs2 million or eight months imprisonment if the fine is not paid. In addition to the fine, the court mandated the compensation payment to Kagyenyi.

A specific payment plan has been established. Mwesigye must first pay the Shs2 million fine and Shs5 million towards the compensation before his release from custody. The remaining Shs295 million is to be paid in full within eight months following his release.

“The convict shall make a down payment of Shs5 million with the fine of Shs2 million before he can be released from custody. The balance of Shs295 million shall be paid within the next eight months after his release; the convict is committed to prison until he satisfies the terms of his sentence and orders,” the ruling stated.

Mwesigye’s lawyer had requested leniency, noting his client was a first-time offender. The ruling underscores the court’s stance against fraudulent property dealings.
