Besigye's Treason Trial Faces Critical Cross-Examination Without Legal Counsel

The treason trial of prominent opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye is set to enter a crucial phase as the defense prepares to cross-examine the prosecution’s main witness, Mr. Andrew Wilson, also known as Orlando. This interrogation is scheduled to commence next Tuesday.
However, Dr. Besigye finds himself in a precarious situation as he will not have his defense lawyers present to conduct this vital questioning. This absence of legal counsel during such a significant part of the proceedings has been described as unusual by renowned criminal lawyer MacDosman Kabega.
Mr. Wilson’s testimony has included allegations that Dr. Besigye proposed actions aimed at inciting civil unrest in Uganda. The witness claimed that Besigye cited widespread dissatisfaction within the police force as an indicator that the country was prepared for such upheaval.
Furthermore, Mr. Wilson has testified that Dr. Besigye referred to an individual named Lutale as his “second in command.” The witness also stated that he himself proposed the idea of poisoning Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) pilots.
In addition to these claims, the court has heard testimony suggesting a plot to spy on President Museveni, with Dr. Besigye and Lutale allegedly planning to surveil State House. An audio recording played in court purportedly captures a voice identified as Dr. Besigye’s, recounting alleged support from police officers for his cause.
The trial, presided over by Justice Emmanuel Baguma, involves Dr. Besigye alongside Mr. Obed Lutaale and UPDF Captain Denis Oola.
