UBC Anchor Prince Kijanangoma Tapped as New Tooro King

The Babiito royal clan has officially selected Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma to ascend to the Tooro throne. The announcement was made at Karuziika Palace by clan elders, marking a significant moment in the kingdom’s succession process.

Kijanangoma, who also works as a news anchor for UBC, will succeed the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. King Oyo passed away on August 27 in the United States after a reign of nearly three decades. He ascended the throne at the tender age of three in September 1995.

The succession process was not without its complexities, as reports emerged of a potential heir sired by the late King Oyo. However, the Babiito royal clan emphasized that any purported heir had not been presented for clan verification, leading to scrutiny of individuals who had publicly discussed the matter.

To navigate the uncertainties, the Babiito clan established a 21-member Royal Succession Committee. This committee was tasked with identifying a suitable successor to the late monarch. While Prince George Desmond Kamurasi, a cousin to the late King, was initially put forward by some reports, it is understood that he declined the nomination.

Prince Kijanangoma’s selection by the clan elders signifies a move towards solidifying the leadership of the Tooro Kingdom. The late King Oyo is scheduled to be laid to rest on September 12.
