Tooro Kingdom Succession Drama: Princess Komuntale Disputes King-Elect

The future of the Tooro monarchy is currently shrouded in uncertainty following Princess Ruth Nsemere Komuntale’s vocal opposition to the newly appointed king-elect, Prince Desmond Kijanangoma. Kijanangoma was announced as the successor to the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who is slated for burial this Saturday.

Princess Komuntale asserts that the selection process overlooked the late King Oyo’s wishes. She claims Oyo designated specific successors in a will, and that Kijanangoma is not among them. Komuntale argues that the Babiito royal clan elders bypassed the established lineage by choosing Kijanangoma, whose father, Christophe Paul Kijanangoma, is mentioned as a secondary option in a purported will attributed to the late King George David Kamurasi Rukidi III.

This alleged will, whose authenticity is unconfirmed, outlines a line of succession starting with Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo (King Oyo’s father), followed by Christophe Paul Kijanangoma, and then Stephen Edgar Paul Karamagi. Komuntale contends the elders should have adhered to the primary line of succession through Kaboyo and his son Oyo, rather than the alternative candidates.

The situation is further complicated by claims that the late King Oyo himself left behind a son. Queen Mother Best Kemigisa reportedly informed President Museveni of this potential heir shortly after Oyo’s death on August 27th. This revelation has spurred calls from within the Babiito clan for the alleged heir to be presented for verification, emphasizing the need for succession to follow Tooro’s cultural traditions.

With the kingdom preparing for its king’s burial, Princess Komuntale’s rejection adds a significant layer of complexity to an already contentious succession process, leaving many questions unanswered about who will ultimately ascend the Tooro throne.
