Tayebwa Celebrates Prof. Kwesiga's Transformative Leadership at Kabale University

Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa has expressed profound admiration for Prof. Joy C. Kwesiga, crediting her with the significant transformation of Kabale University during her two decades as Vice Chancellor. Speaking at a farewell ceremony, Tayebwa emphasized that Prof. Kwesiga’s impact extended far beyond the university, benefiting the Kigezi region and the broader higher education sector in Uganda.

Tayebwa remarked that Prof. Kwesiga’s tenure, which began in 2005, saw Kabale University evolve from a nascent institution into one of national importance. He particularly lauded her decision to dedicate her prime years to serving her home region, a move he described as a significant risk and a testament to her commitment.

“I am not here to celebrate your exit. I am here to celebrate a testimony, a record of service that opened doors for very many people, not only in Kigezi but beyond Kigezi,” Tayebwa stated during the event held on September 4, 2026.

Furthermore, the Deputy Speaker highlighted Prof. Kwesiga’s role in breaking gender barriers in leadership. He noted that her achievements serve as a powerful example that excellence is not determined by gender, thereby inspiring many women to pursue leadership roles.

Kabale University’s success, Tayebwa added, is also a model for other community-owned universities transitioning into public institutions. He challenged the university to remain relevant by aligning its programs and research with the pressing issues facing the Kigezi region, such as poverty and malnutrition, suggesting a focus on science and medicine.

Prof. Kwesiga’s extensive career in higher education spans over fifty years, including significant leadership positions at Makerere University before her impactful leadership at Kabale University.
