Roxberry Launches Title Defense as Pool League Returns

The Nile Special National Pool League is set to commence this Sunday, with reigning champions Roxberry aiming to defend their title. The league’s return marks the start of a new season, organized under the Pool Association of Uganda (PAU) with technical director Muhammad Wasswa Kayiiya overseeing administrative realignments. Sixteen men’s teams have been strategically divided into four groups, each competing in a round-robin format on neutral tables.

Roxberry, who clinched the championship in 2025, will launch their defense at Beluga Lounge in Kitintale. They are placed in a challenging group alongside Kireka, last season’s runner-up Upper Volta, and former champions Mbale. The team captain, Ibrahim Ssejjemba, has confirmed that their championship-winning squad remains intact, expressing confidence in their ability to fight for another title.

A key fixture to watch on the opening weekend is the clash between Roxberry and Upper Volta. National champion Caesar Chandiga, a player rumored to be a target for Roxberry, will be a central figure in this encounter, with his club allegiance adding to the pre-match intrigue.

Meanwhile, Greater Mukono, a new-look team, will compete at iTaano Arena in Mukono against Pot It, Sinkers, and E-Play. Head coach Ben Kinene acknowledges the uncertainty following the prolonged break but remains hopeful. Despite previous successes, Kinene is cautious about potential home-crowd nerves affecting his players. Greater Mukono has seen some personnel changes, losing their captain and other key players, but has also recruited experienced campaigners and rookies to strengthen their roster.

Other opening weekend fixtures include New Base Hotel Nansana hosting Tororo Tigers, Club 408, and Wakiso City. In Kireka, Adi’s Spot will welcome Adi’s, Capital Night, and Nakawa.

In preparation for the season, PAU has released its first venue inspection report. Beluga Lounge, New Base Hotel, Adi’s Spot, iTaano, and Amigoz Sports Bar have been certified as fully compliant (Category A). Some venues, like Roxberry Bar and Upper Volta, received conditional clearance, requiring facility adjustments. Club 408 and Club Victoria face challenges under Category C due to table limitations.

The women’s league is scheduled to begin in two weeks.
