Obore and Six Colleagues Granted Shs27 Billion Corruption Scandal Bail

Interdicted Parliament Director of Communications and Public Affairs, Chris Obore, and six of his colleagues have been granted bail by the Anti-Corruption Court. They are facing charges in an alleged Shs27 billion corruption scandal that has seen them remanded at Luzira Prison since July 1, 2026.

Obore was granted Shs30 million cash bail, while other officials received varying amounts, ranging from Shs20 million to Shs35 million in cash. A key condition for all accused is the surrender of their passports and land titles to the court. Their sureties are also required to execute non-cash bonds ranging from Shs300 million, ensuring their appearance for future court proceedings.

The charges against the seven officials stem from allegations of embezzlement and causing financial loss. They were previously interdicted following a directive from the Inspector General of Government to safeguard public interest and the integrity of Parliament during the ongoing criminal proceedings.

The legal proceedings are part of a broader corruption investigation that previously involved former Speaker Anita Among. While Among was implicated, she was never charged and her case was eventually dropped. The prosecution indicated that investigations were advanced and sought more time to prepare for the High Court trial, a move criticized by the defense who argued against prolonged detention.

Obore had also separately petitioned the High Court for bail, citing his status as a first-time offender and sole family breadwinner.
