A group of bright young minds in Kikuube District has engineered an innovative smart collar for cattle, leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to revolutionize livestock management. This groundbreaking device is designed to monitor the health of animals, potentially identifying diseases up to two days before visible symptoms manifest, thus allowing for timely veterinary intervention.
Led by Enock Nuwahereza, a graduate with expertise in business and livestock, the team’s innovation addresses a critical gap for farmers who rely on herders and often struggle with remote oversight. The AI-powered collar is worn by the cow and transmits data to a smartphone or computer application, providing real-time insights.
Farmers can use the app to track grazing habits, determine when a cow is in heat, and receive alerts about potential health issues. Nuwahereza highlighted that this technology is particularly beneficial for busy professionals or those with farms located far from their primary residences, helping to prevent significant losses that can occur due to undetected illnesses.
Beyond health monitoring, the smart collar incorporates a virtual fencing system. Farmers can digitally define grazing areas via their phones or computers. If a cow attempts to leave the designated zone, the collar emits an alert and an unpleasant sound, guiding the animal back. This feature could significantly reduce conflicts arising from livestock straying into crop fields.
The innovators are committed to making the device accessible, using locally sourced, low-cost materials. They estimate the collar will cost around Shs50,000, with a battery life of approximately two and a half years. The technology is currently undergoing trials, and the team is seeking government support to refine it and bring this transformative tool to the wider Ugandan agricultural market.
