Kampala Hosts Ethiopian New Year Celebration Emphasizing Unity and Solidarity

Kampala recently became the vibrant hub for the Ethiopian New Year celebration, an event meticulously organized by the Ethiopian Embassy in Uganda. Held at Mestil Hotel, the occasion brought together Ethiopians living in the diaspora and friends of Ethiopia to usher in the new year under the theme, “Unity in Diversity: Ethiopia’s Ornament.”

The evening was a rich tapestry of Ethiopian culture, featuring traditional performances, authentic cuisine, and a captivating coffee ceremony. Many guests embraced the cultural spirit by wearing traditional white attire, while Ethiopian music and dance created an immersive atmosphere, allowing the community to reconnect with their roots.

Beyond the cultural showcase, the celebration also served as a platform for solidarity and humanitarian support. A significant portion of the evening was dedicated to fundraising for Ethiopians impacted by natural and man-made disasters. Through moving performances and dedicated initiatives, nearly $3,000 was raised, underscoring the compassion and community spirit of attendees.

Ambassador Etsegenet Bezabih Yimenu spoke on the importance of the “Day of Unity,” emphasizing how Ethiopia’s strength lies in its vast diversity. She explained the unique Ethiopian calendar, including its 13th month, and how, despite differences in language, dress, and customs across regions, a common Ethiopian identity unites all.

Salim Uhuru, Mayor of Kampala Central Division, graced the event as the chief guest. He congratulated the Ethiopian community and highlighted the strong bilateral ties and shared African identity between Uganda and Ethiopia, pledging support from Kampala leadership.

The festivities continued with poetry, traditional dances, and presentations on Ethiopia’s development. A cake-cutting ceremony and a raffle for an Ethiopian Airlines ticket added to the celebratory mood, culminating in an event that beautifully intertwined diplomatic relations, cultural pride, and humanitarian outreach.
