Retired Major General Abel Kandiho and Brigadier General Charles Bakahumura, both former heads of the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI), are reportedly in detention. Military sources indicate they were arrested on Tuesday morning as part of an expanding inquiry into the production of false intelligence and alleged treachery.
Their arrests follow the recent retirement of 19 UPDF generals, including Kandiho and Bakahumura, on August 20, 2026. This development brings the total number of senior military intelligence officers detained in connection with these allegations to four.
Kandiho, who led CMI from 2017 until his recent retirement, rose through the ranks to Major General. Bakahumura previously served as CMI chief from 2012 to 2017 before a seven-year tenure in logistics and engineering. Their detention is believed to be linked to an investigation initiated by the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
Other senior officers reportedly detained include former DIS chief Maj Gen James Birungi, Col Peter Ahimbisibwe of Counter-Terrorism, and Lt Col Ephraim Byaruhanga of Special Operations. Birungi and Byaruhanga have already been charged with treachery before the General Court Martial and are currently remanded.
The UPDF has yet to issue an official statement regarding these arrests. Earlier on Tuesday, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba posted on social media hinting at the capture of “dancing Generals” and warning against the submission of false intelligence, though he did not name the individuals involved.
