Democratic Front Seeks 2031 Presidential Hopeful

The Democratic Front (DF) has initiated the process of identifying a presidential candidate for the upcoming 2031 general elections. This move comes after the party opted not to field a presidential contender in the recently concluded 2026 polls, citing concerns about the electoral process being a ‘mere ritual’ with predetermined outcomes.
According to DF National Chairman Samuel Walter Lubega Mukaaku, the party is actively seeking individuals with the necessary qualifications and a compelling vision for Uganda. “We are not simply looking for another name to put on the ballot. Our objective is to provide a credible political alternative and present a leader who can offer Ugandans a different direction,” Mukaaku stated during a press briefing on September 9.
The party leadership emphasized that the search is open to all eligible Ugandans. Aspiring candidates will be required to submit a clear, measurable, and implementable manifesto to the DF National Executive Committee for thorough vetting.
DF has been undergoing a period of internal reorganization and reflection following the 2026 elections. While the party did not secure any parliamentary seats, it managed to win a few local council positions. The focus has been on strengthening grassroots structures and parliamentary representation.
DF expects its potential presidential candidates to address critical national issues. These include fostering democratic governance and restoring public confidence in state institutions, driving economic transformation to create jobs and opportunities, particularly for the youth, ensuring national security through professional and constitutionally bound security forces, and tackling corruption and institutional weaknesses through comprehensive renewal strategies.
