Sinotruk Crash Claims Two Lives on Kampala-Hoima Highway

A devastating road accident occurred on Tuesday afternoon at Nkoowe, along the Kampala-Hoima Highway, claiming the lives of two individuals and leaving nine others injured. The incident involved a Sinotruk truck carrying stones, which reportedly lost control and collided with three other vehicles.

The vehicles involved included a Toyota Hiace commuter taxi, a Subaru Forester, and a Toyota Wish. According to traffic police, the Sinotruk, registered as UBK 495F, was traveling from Kakiri towards Kampala when the crash happened around 1:33 PM. The commuter taxi had reportedly stopped to pick up passengers at the time of the impact.

The driver and conductor of the commuter taxi sustained fatal injuries at the scene. Of the nine injured passengers in the taxi, five are adults and four are juveniles. They were rushed for medical attention following the collision.

This latest incident adds to a growing chorus of concern regarding the safety record of Sinotruk trucks in Uganda. Road safety advocates and the public have repeatedly called for stricter measures to address the frequent involvement of these trucks in fatal accidents under similar circumstances.

In response to these concerns, the government recently announced a two-month window for the mandatory inspection of all Sinotruk vehicles operating within the Greater Kampala area, which includes Wakiso, Mukono, and parts of Mpigi and Kayunga districts. Trucks failing to comply with the inspection requirements face impoundment. This initiative follows discussions between the Ministry of Works and Transport, Sinotruk owners, and the police.

Uganda faces a significant road safety challenge, with statistics indicating that an average of 15 lives are lost daily due to road crashes nationwide.
