Iganga Recovers Shs55 Million Extorted from PDM Beneficiaries

Iganga District has seen a significant recovery of Shs55 million, which was reportedly extorted from individuals participating in the government’s Parish Development Model (PDM) initiative. The funds were allegedly taken by parish chiefs and other local officials who promised access to PDM money in exchange for bribes.
Resident District Commissioner Eric Sewandagi confirmed the recovery, stating that the money was returned after residents petitioned his office with accusations against the local leaders. “All the suspects are out on police bond and are expected to appear in court to answer charges of sabotaging government programmes,” Sewandagi stated.
As investigations continue, the implicated civil servants have been suspended. This crackdown comes just ahead of an anti-corruption tour of Iganga and Kaliro districts by the Minister of Local Government, Balam Barugahara Atenyi. Officials believe the minister’s visit will bolster efforts to combat corruption and ensure the proper implementation of the PDM, a program designed to enhance household incomes.
District finance committee member Rogers Lyagoba noted that residents had repeatedly raised concerns about officials demanding bribes. “We have many issues to raise with the minister, including absenteeism among health workers and teachers, as well as poor service delivery, particularly regarding roads,” said Hasan Kisubi, a resident of Nakigo, echoing broader community grievances.
Residents expressed hope that the minister’s visit will lead to a more robust fight against corruption and create opportunities for the youth, as highlighted by Aisha Babisoona of Naibiri Village. “Many of our youths are suffering because of unemployment. If this area is free from corruption, the young generation will be able to access government jobs without having to pay bribes,” she urged.
