Fifa Women's Campaign Inspires Northern Uganda's Young Talent

The northern region of Uganda recently buzzed with excitement as the Fifa Women’s Football Campaign made a significant impact in Lira and Gulu districts. From September 3-5, the initiative, organized by the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (Fufa), transformed local schools into vibrant hubs for aspiring female footballers.

Lira P7 Primary School hosted a major event, drawing over 230 girls from 16 different schools and academies. These young athletes participated in small-sided games across various age categories (8-10, 11-12, and 13-14), alongside engaging skills challenges and fun football activities designed to build fundamental abilities. Beyond the pitch, the campaign included crucial awareness sessions on safeguarding, gender equality, and potential career paths within women’s football.

Leading the charge as ambassadors were Ugandan stars Phionah Arach, a winger for Rines SS, and Juliet Adeke, a goalkeeper for Kawempe Muslim. Both shared their experiences and aspirations, with Arach highlighting the importance of starting young and Adeke noting the lack of such structured programs for her generation. They emphasized their gratitude to Fufa for creating these opportunities.

The campaign kicked off with a Coaches Workshop and a ceremonial launch attended by Fufa officials and Fifa representatives, who also donated over 100 footballs and jerseys. Fifa women’s football expert Thuba Sibanda encouraged the girls to remain disciplined, stay in school, and pursue their passion for football.

Fufa is committed to nurturing the talent identified during the campaign, with promising players potentially being considered for Fufa Schools of Excellence, bridging the gap between grassroots engagement and structured development. Plans are also in motion to pilot an U-17 Girls League, with the northern region set to benefit.
