DP Postpones NEC Meeting to Honor King Oyo

The Democratic Party (DP) has announced a postponement of its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, which was slated to take place on September 11th and 12th, 2026. The party’s leadership, under President General Norbert Mao, decided to push the meeting to the first week of October.

This change is in response to the passing of the Omukama of Tooro, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. The original dates for the NEC meeting unfortunately coincided with the national mourning period and the scheduled burial of the late King.

In a statement released on September 8th, Mao explained that the postponement was a directive to the party’s Secretary General. The decision reflects a deep respect for the late monarch and allows DP members to join the rest of the nation in paying their respects.

The DP also highlighted its historical ties to the Tooro region. The party noted that Tooro has previously elected members of Parliament on the DP ticket in the general elections of 1961, 1962, and 1980. A notable figure was William Nyakatura, elected in 1980, who later served as Prime Minister of the Tooro Kingdom during King Oyo’s reign.

Mao stated that the party intends to use this period of postponement to fully honor the late King and show solidarity with the people of Tooro and all Ugandans during this time of national grief. DP officials, led by Mao, are expected to represent the party at the funeral ceremonies.

The postponement comes as Uganda observes a period of official mourning for King Oyo, whose death has prompted widespread tributes from various sectors within and outside the country.
