Busitema University Eyes Medals at FASU Games in Cairo

Busitema University students are representing Uganda at the 12th edition of the Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) games currently underway in Cairo, Egypt. They are joining peers from Bugema and Nkumba universities in this continental championship.

This year marks a significant debut for Busitema as they will compete in athletics for the first time, alongside their participation in chess and lawn tennis. This expansion into a new discipline is a strategic move to enhance their medal prospects.

Timothy Omara, the games union chairperson, expressed optimism about the team’s potential in athletics. “Since it is the first time, we are competing against the best in the whole continent, this will bring the best out of our team,” Omara stated. He added that the team is not intimidated by their opponents and aims to perform their best, inspiring future athletes from their campus.

The FASU games have drawn approximately 2000 athletes and officials from 81 universities across 17 African nations. The event is designed to promote a comprehensive educational philosophy, emphasizing excellence in both academics and sports.

Busitema University’s Vice Chancellor, Paul Wako, highlighted the importance of the games. “We do not only excel in academics, we also excel in sports and in Cairo we expect the Busitema University flag to fly high, the Ugandan flag to fly high and above all and we expect a high level of discipline to be exhibited as expected of us,” Wako remarked. Athletes will compete across 21 disciplines, including athletics, chess, tennis, and taekwondo.
