A devastating road accident in Bushenyi District on Monday afternoon claimed the lives of three adult men and left ten others with injuries. The incident involved a Toyota Hiace taxi that was transporting mourners.
The vehicle was en route from Kashaka in Mbarara District to Rwererere in Rukungiri District when it crashed in Omukatagu Village around 4 PM.
Preliminary investigations by the Traffic Police suggest that excessive speed was the primary cause of the crash. “Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver failed to negotiate a corner due to excessive speed,” stated SP Michael Kananura, the Traffic Police Spokesperson.
He further explained that speeding significantly impairs a driver’s ability to react and manage bends safely. The identity of the driver has not yet been established.
The injured parties, whose names have been released by police, were promptly transported to Kitagata Hospital and KIU Teaching Hospital for medical attention. The deceased’s identities are still being withheld pending formal identification.
The wreckage of the taxi has been taken to Ishaka Police Station for further inspection by an Inspector of Vehicles (IOV).
