Amus College continues its dominant streak in Ugandan football, recently adding the Cecafa regional title to an already stellar year. The Bukedea-based school emerged victorious in the Caf African Schools Football Championship Cecafa qualifiers, held in Kigali, Rwanda.
In a tense final, Amus College edged out the host nation, Rwanda, with a solitary goal scored by Kennedy Okwi in the 39th minute. This crucial goal secured a 1-0 victory, crowning Amus as the boys’ regional champions for the second year running and silencing the home crowd.
The championship’s success translated into substantial prize money, with the winning boys’ team receiving $100,000 (approximately Shs377 million) from the Motsepe Foundation, designated for school development.
Amus College’s dominance was further highlighted by a clean sweep of individual awards in the boys’ category. Kennedy Okwi finished as the top scorer, while goalkeeper Stuart Mukasa was recognized as the best in his position. Vincent Kizza Mawanda was deservedly named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, underscoring the team’s exceptional performance.
The Amus College girls’ team also achieved success, securing third place in their competition and earning an additional US$50,000 (Shs188 million) after defeating Rwanda 2-0 in the playoff. This brought Amus’ total prize money from the event to a remarkable US$150,000 (Shs566 million).
The Cecafa victory qualifies the Amus boys to represent the region at the upcoming Caf African Schools Football Championship finals, where they will compete against the best school teams on the continent.
