Whereabouts of Charles Rwomushana and Ivan Mwijukye Unknown Following Abductions

The country is seeking answers regarding the whereabouts of prominent political commentator Charles Rwomushana and NRM supporter Ivan Mwijukye, who were both taken by armed individuals over the weekend. Rwomushana was reportedly abducted from Radio Simba studios in Bukoto on Saturday during a live talk show. Mwijukye, described as a student and NRM activist, was intercepted on a bus along the Kampala-Masaka Road in Mpigi District on Thursday.

Friends and colleagues of both men have stated that no security agency has come forward to confirm their detention or provide any information about their status. The host of the radio show attended by Rwomushana confirmed that efforts to locate him are ongoing.

Official statements from the police and the military have been absent. Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke indicated he had not yet received a briefing on Rwomushana’s case, promising to share details once available. Attempts to reach the UPDF spokesperson, Colonel Chris Magezi, were unsuccessful.

This is not the first time Charles Rwomushana has faced detention. In January 2016, he was arrested by security agents following the publication of an image resembling a missing individual linked to former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi. Upon his release, Rwomushana reported being subjected to physical mistreatment.

The disappearances of Rwomushana and Mwijukye add to a growing concern over individuals being taken by armed groups without recourse to legal channels or family contact. Just two weeks prior, Matthew Bagonza, an aide to Odrek Rwabwogo, was similarly abducted, with his location also remaining unknown.
