Uganda's Coffee Exports Decline Sharply in July

Uganda, a prominent coffee exporter in Africa, saw its coffee shipments decrease by 15.1% in July. The Ministry of Agriculture reported that the nation exported 846,376 bags of coffee in July, a notable decrease from the 997,105 bags shipped during the same period last year.
This reduction in volume also impacted the revenue generated from coffee exports. Earnings from these shipments in July amounted to $204.1 million, marking an 18.6% decline from the previous year’s figures for the same month.
The Ministry of Agriculture has not officially stated the specific reasons behind this downturn in exports. However, the country has recently experienced severe drought conditions in many regions, which are known to adversely affect agricultural output and crop yields.
Coffee, alongside gold, stands as one of Uganda’s principal commodity exports and a vital contributor to the nation’s foreign exchange reserves. The dip in coffee exports could therefore have broader economic implications.
