Uganda’s coffee sector is set to gain a significant foothold in the South Korean market through a newly established partnership. An exclusive distribution agreement has been signed with South Korean firm Global Value Change Coffee Center (GVCC) Co. Ltd.
This landmark deal designates Besmark Coffee Company Ltd as Uganda’s sole supply partner for this venture, while GVCC will exclusively distribute Ugandan coffee throughout South Korea. This strategic alliance is a key outcome of the recent Uganda–Korea Trade and Investment Meeting held in Busan.
The initial phase of this partnership involves the shipment of 40 tonnes of Ugandan coffee, comprising two 20-tonne containers, which are now on their way to Busan. This move signifies Uganda’s commitment to diversifying its export destinations and strengthening its presence in burgeoning Asian economies.
Officials highlighted that this agreement is more than just market access; it is expected to foster opportunities for value addition within Uganda’s coffee industry. By connecting local producers and exporters directly with higher-value international markets, the partnership aims to enhance returns for Ugandan coffee farmers.
This initiative is a core component of Uganda’s broader economic and commercial diplomacy strategy. The government is actively working to expand export markets, deepen trade relations, and promote value addition throughout the coffee supply chain. The Ugandan delegation, including Second Deputy Prime Minister Crispus Kiyonga and representatives from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, emphasized the quality of Ugandan coffee and the potential of such partnerships to elevate the nation’s standing in the global coffee trade.
“Ugandan coffee has a strong reputation for quality. Partnerships such as this create a pathway for our farmers and exporters to access premium markets while strengthening Uganda’s position in the global coffee trade,” stated Richard Okot, Assistant Commissioner for External Trade. This agreement underscores Uganda’s ongoing efforts to secure new markets and boost earnings from its primary agricultural export.
