Dr. Michelle Corral, an American televangelist with a significant ministry network across East Africa, recently shifted her focus from pastoral training to direct humanitarian aid in Uganda. Following a pastors’ conference in Kampala, she and her team ventured into the crowded Katanga informal settlement, distributing vital household items, clothing, and toys.
Beyond material aid, Corral’s team served meals to more than 5,000 residents in Katanga, a community facing severe challenges with sanitation, healthcare access, and daily survival. This initiative provided a much-needed respite for families grappling with extreme poverty and lack of basic services.
Corral has now set her sights on the Bidi Bidi Refugee Settlement, one of the largest in the world, where humanitarian funding cuts have severely impacted health services. The settlement faces critical issues, including high rates of acute malnutrition and malaria, exacerbated by the loss of healthcare workers and essential medicines following the termination of USAID contracts.
Uganda hosts a substantial refugee population, making its health system increasingly strained. The dwindling international support places a significant burden on the country’s resources, leading to reduced aid, staffing shortages, and limited access to healthcare for refugees.
Corral’s ministry, which has trained over 10,800 pastors across East Africa, is attempting to bridge the gap between religious outreach and essential services. While her organization is not equipped for direct medical care, her intervention highlights the growing reliance on faith-based groups to support communities and refugees as international aid diminishes.
Her efforts have been acknowledged by Ugandan leadership, who recognize faith-based organizations as crucial partners in supporting vulnerable populations. Corral has pledged to return to Bidi Bidi, prompting questions about the long-term sustainability of such charitable efforts in addressing a deepening health crisis.
