Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan is in mourning following the death of her husband, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, on September 7, 2026. Mr. Hassan passed away at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar City, where he had been undergoing treatment for a heart-related illness.
Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi officially announced the news, extending deep condolences to the President and her family during this difficult time. “It is with great sadness that I inform you of the death of Mr Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan,” Ndejembi stated.
Mr. Hassan, who was 77, had a career as an agricultural officer and academic before his retirement. He married President Samia in 1978, and they raised four children together. Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, has also entered public service in Zanzibar.
While President Samia has had a long career in public life, Mr. Hassan largely maintained a private life, seldom appearing at official state functions. He became Tanzania’s First Gentleman in March 2021 when his wife assumed the presidency.
Funeral arrangements are currently being made in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar, where Mr. Hassan will be laid to rest. His passing is being met with sorrow from relatives, friends, and government officials across the nation.
