Nebbi Parking Yard Owners Lament Council's Delayed Truck Eviction

Owners of private truck parking facilities in Nebbi town are expressing frustration over dwindling business, blaming the Nebbi Municipal Council for its slow action. The council had issued a one-month ultimatum for truck operators to vacate road-side parking and use designated yards, a move expected to boost private yard revenue.

However, the prolonged delay in enforcing this directive has left many yard owners struggling. Shafik Newenjule, who runs Newenjule Parking Yard, reported earning a meager Shs10,000 to Shs15,000 per night, with even this income being inconsistent as trucks continue to occupy public spaces.

“Sometimes, we go days without having these clients who resort to park in the town centre instead,” Newenjule stated, highlighting the impact on his investment.

The continued presence of trucks on town roads not only affects private businesses but also contributes to traffic congestion and obstructs access to other commercial establishments.

Responding to the concerns, Deputy Mayor Howard Musa acknowledged the delay, citing a lack of operational funds as the primary impediment. He explained that a freeze on central government transfers has prevented the council from accessing necessary funds for enforcement.

“Our main challenge has been funds to enforce the eviction. We can’t do much without funds at our disposal,” Musa explained. He noted that the Chief Finance Officer is engaging the Ministry of Finance to resolve the issue, expressing optimism for a swift resolution.

The ultimatum, issued in July with enforcement slated for August, aimed to decongest the town and improve order. The planned enforcement exercise was expected to involve security agencies like the police and the army.
