Kisoro District Reels from Two Suspected Suicide Deaths

Two individuals have tragically died in Kisoro district in suspected suicide incidents involving hanging, occurring within approximately 15 hours of each other. The first death was that of 80-year-old Andrew Ndagijimana, discovered on Saturday evening in Mataramba village. His wife, Tereza Nyirayanze, returned from work in the Democratic Republic of Congo to find their house locked from the inside. Neighbours assisted in breaking down the door, revealing Ndagijimana hanging inside.

The second incident took place on Sunday morning in Chahi village, where Brian Mbonyebyombi was found hanging. Police reports indicate that Mbonyebyombi had returned home intoxicated and, shortly after, his wife discovered him deceased in their bedroom.

Kigezi Region police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime confirmed both deaths and stated that investigations are underway. Preliminary findings suggest Mbonyebyombi had a history of suicide attempts, particularly when consuming alcohol. Police are urging individuals facing mental health struggles, stress, or financial difficulties to seek help from counselors, religious leaders, or trusted individuals.

These incidents have highlighted a concerning link between alcohol abuse and mental health challenges in the Kigezi region. Data from the Uganda National Institute of Public Health suggests that alcohol use disorder significantly increases suicide risk by exacerbating mental health issues, reducing impulse control, and worsening social and financial problems. A recent report from Kabale Regional Referral Hospital indicated a substantial number of psychiatric admissions linked to alcohol use disorder in the Kigezi area, underscoring the pervasive nature of this issue.

Police continue their investigations into the specific circumstances surrounding these two tragic deaths.
