Deputy Speaker Tayebwa Backs Muhoozi's 2031 Presidential Bid

Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, has thrown his support behind calls for General Muhoozi Kainerugaba to contest the presidency in 2031. Tayebwa’s endorsement came during a civic event organized by the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), where citizens formally requested the army chief to consider leading the nation after President Museveni’s tenure.

The event saw a gathering of various dignitaries including ministers, Members of Parliament, and prominent citizens, all united by the PLU’s initiative. Tayebwa articulated that the public’s desire for Muhoozi to lead is a lawful and nationwide civic expression, underscoring the General’s contributions to Uganda’s defense and national development.

“This is our own choice as citizens to call upon him to accept our request for him to lead us once the father of the nation, President Museveni, retires,” Tayebwa stated, emphasizing the grassroots nature of the movement.

The PLU, as highlighted by Tayebwa, functions as a civic platform rather than a political party. It aims to rally Ugandans, particularly the youth, around principles of patriotism, national service, and the protection of the country’s achievements. While acknowledging its close alignment with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), Tayebwa clarified that the PLU seeks to complement, not compete with, the NRM’s political agenda.

“The NRM remains our political home, while PLU provides a civic platform to organise citizens, especially young people, around patriotism, national service and the defence of Uganda’s gains,” he explained. This move positions Muhoozi Kainerugaba, currently the Chief of Defence Forces, at the forefront of early presidential discussions for 2031, despite the UPDF Act’s stipulations regarding political involvement for serving military officers.
