Deputy Speaker Tayebwa Advises Lyantonde on El Niño Preparedness

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has issued a call to action for the residents of Lyantonde District, urging them to prepare for the predicted El Niño rains. Tayebwa highlighted the potential for increased rainfall to cause flooding, a significant concern for a district often prone to drought.

Speaking at the 138th-anniversary celebrations of Kinuka Church of Uganda, where he represented President Yoweri Museveni, Tayebwa advised the community to leverage the coming rains for agricultural purposes. He encouraged residents to ready their gardens for the upcoming planting season, while simultaneously implementing measures to mitigate the risks associated with potential flooding.

Lyantonde has historically faced challenges with prolonged dry spells, impacting agricultural output and water availability. Tayebwa noted the government’s ongoing efforts to improve water access for both domestic and productive use, but stressed the importance of residents complementing these initiatives through modern farming and livestock practices.

Beyond agricultural preparedness, Tayebwa also addressed the issue of electricity infrastructure vandalism within the district. He echoed concerns raised by Bishop Gaster Nsereko regarding the high rate of vandalism, warning that such acts could disrupt power supply and hinder economic activities. Tayebwa urged the community to actively participate in identifying and reporting perpetrators, emphasizing that strong legal punishment for offenders would serve as a deterrent.

During the event, Tayebwa also conveyed President Museveni’s commendation of the Church of Uganda’s contributions to various sectors and encouraged citizens to engage in government programs aimed at economic development. He further lauded local leaders for their efforts in poverty reduction within Lyantonde.
