Buganda Kingdom’s Attorney General, Christopher Bwanika, recently engaged in discussions with German Judge Harald Jannet and a visiting delegation of legal and medical professionals. The delegation is in Uganda to research traditional justice systems within the Buganda region.
During the meeting, Bwanika elaborated on Buganda’s customary methods of dispute resolution, highlighting the role of ‘Bitaawuluzi’ at the village level. These community-based forums allow local members to actively participate in resolving conflicts, ensuring that complainants can find swift and appropriate solutions.
Bwanika expressed the Kingdom’s openness to collaborations that enhance the well-being of its people. He noted the potential for the German delegation to work alongside the Buganda Kingdom, contributing to advancements in the legal sector.
“The Kingdom welcomes everyone who comes to us, especially those who are interested in improving the welfare of our people,” Bwanika stated. He emphasized the significant number of pending cases in Uganda’s courts and underscored the value of alternative, community-driven approaches to dispute resolution as a means to alleviate this burden.
Judge Jannet, a magistrate from a regional German court, conveyed his gratitude for the exchange, acknowledging the distinctiveness of Buganda’s legal framework compared to practices in Germany. He described the Kingdom’s approach to resolving disputes as one that upholds fairness and justice.
The German delegation also had the opportunity to tour Bulange, the seat of the Buganda Kingdom, where they received a comprehensive briefing on its organizational structure and operational functions.
