The electoral journey for the vacant Adjumani West Constituency parliamentary seat commenced on Monday, September 7, with three independent candidates securing their nominations. Patrick Tandrupasi, Gasper Draga, and Ben Anyama were the first to formally enter the contest, which will culminate in a by-election on September 17, 2026.
The nominations were overseen by Christine Akao Eunice, the returning officer for the Adjumani District Electoral Commission. Tandrupasi, making his third bid for the seat, highlighted his focus on commercial agriculture and high-value crops like coffee and cocoa as central to his campaign strategy.
Draga, also on his third attempt, stated that education and skills development would be his primary agenda if elected. He believes that empowering the populace through education is key to achieving other developmental goals.
Anyama, the third nominee on the opening day, called for a peaceful and neutral electoral process, urging security forces to remain impartial and his supporters to uphold law and order.
Returning Officer Akao Eunice reminded all candidates and their supporters to adhere strictly to electoral laws. The nomination period continues on Tuesday, September 8, with the Electoral Commission anticipating more aspirants to register.
The vacancy arose due to the passing of former MP Gen. (Rtd) Moses Ali. Approximately 51,438 voters are eligible to cast their ballots in the upcoming election, which will cover Adjumani Town Council and several surrounding sub-counties.
As nominations conclude, the focus now shifts to the campaign trail as candidates prepare to rally support across the constituency.
