Storm Wreaks Havoc at Apac School, Threatening Education for 1,000 Pupils

The start of the third term at Aketo Primary School in Apac District is in jeopardy after a severe storm ripped through the area, destroying crucial classroom infrastructure.

Early Saturday morning, a powerful wind accompanied by heavy rain tore off the entire roof of a four-classroom block at Aketo Parish. The damage extended to the headteacher’s office, which also served as the school’s book storage.

Patrick Agole, the headteacher, reported that the incident not only damaged the physical structure, including iron sheets and timber, but also destroyed a 70-watt solar panel used for lighting. Vital learning materials and important school records stored in his office were also lost.

With over 1,000 pupils from Primary One to Seven, Aketo Primary School already grappled with a significant classroom shortage. This latest disaster has exacerbated the problem, forcing school officials to consider drastic measures, such as outdoor or temporary shelter learning, if repairs are not made promptly.

“I am calling upon well-wishers and the government to support us so that we can put back the roof before the reopening of the term,” Agole appealed.

Local leaders have pledged support. Alex Ogota, the LC3 chairperson for Ibuje Sub-county, stated that leaders would convene with school administration to strategize resource mobilization for the repairs. Ogota also advised the school to plant trees around the compound to act as windbreaks in the future.

The school now faces immense pressure to rectify the infrastructural damage before the students’ return, highlighting a persistent challenge in providing adequate educational facilities.
