Makerere University Breaks Ground on Shs96 Billion Business College Complex

Construction has begun on a substantial new infrastructure complex for Makerere University’s College of Business and Management Sciences (CoBAMS). The project, valued at Shs96.6 billion and fully funded by the government, will provide a much-needed consolidated space for teaching, research, and graduate training.
The 15,000-square-metre facility is set to replace the college’s current fragmented and overcrowded premises, which have struggled to keep pace with CoBAMS’s significant growth in both student numbers and academic programs. The handover of the construction site to contractor Roko Construction Ltd. marks a historic milestone, according to Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe.
“This is a historic moment in many ways. CoBAMS has come a long way,” Prof. Nawangwe stated during the site handover on September 4. “It has grown tremendously to become one of the largest colleges at Makerere University… and because of that growth, it has also been operating from accommodation that is fragmented.”
Roko Construction, represented by CEO Mark Koehler, acknowledged past perceptions of project delays and pledged to deliver the new complex with both quality and timeliness. “Our commitment is clear. We want to deliver the quality for which Roko is known, but at the same time, we want to deliver within the agreed programme,” Koehler remarked.
The complex, designed by Symbion Uganda Limited, will incorporate academic and administrative offices, as well as social spaces, with a focus on sustainability and long-term affordability. CoBAMS Principal, Prof. Edward Bbaale, expressed optimism that the completed facility will elevate the college’s standing globally in business, economics, and statistics education.
This development is expected to significantly enhance the learning environment and contribute to Makerere University’s broader transformation agenda, potentially altering the university’s physical landscape for the better.
