El Niño Explained: More Than Just Floods for East Africa

Many associate El Niño with devastating floods, but climate experts emphasize its complexity. El Niño is a naturally occurring climate pattern originating in the tropical Pacific Ocean, characterized by the warming of ocean surface waters. It is one phase of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), a cycle that also includes neutral conditions and the cooler La Niña phase.
This phenomenon disrupts global atmospheric circulation, leading to varied weather consequences worldwide. While some regions might experience drought, others could face excessive rainfall. “El Niño is not climate change,” clarifies climate expert Dr. Michael Terungwa, distinguishing it as a natural climate variability.
Hannah Kimani from the Kenya Meteorological Service Authority explains that ENSO events influence global temperatures and precipitation. These natural cycles occur roughly every two to seven years and can last for about a year. During El Niño, established wind and moisture distribution patterns are altered, affecting weather thousands of kilometers away.
However, understanding East Africa’s weather requires considering multiple factors. The region’s climate is influenced by systems like the Indian Ocean Dipole, the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone, and sea surface temperatures. Kimani notes that the Indian Ocean Dipole often has a stronger correlation with rainfall in East Africa than El Niño itself.
The impact of El Niño in East Africa is not uniform and varies by season. From June to September, it can be associated with reduced rainfall in western Kenya and parts of Uganda. Conversely, during the October-to-December rainfall season, El Niño combined with a positive Indian Ocean Dipole can enhance rainfall.
Communication about weather forecasts also presents challenges. “Above normal rainfall” does not guarantee daily rain but indicates a higher-than-average cumulative amount, which may come in intense bursts. Similarly, “below normal rainfall” doesn’t mean no rain, just a cumulative deficit. The timing, distribution, and intensity of rainfall are crucial for agriculture, not just the total volume. Dr. Terungwa highlights that understanding these climate phenomena helps journalists report on the broader impacts, from crop failure and food prices to infrastructure damage and household safety.
Ultimately, El Niño’s significance lies in how global climate shifts affect local realities, influencing farming decisions, water availability for pastoralists, food costs, and community safety. It underscores the interconnectedness of distant ocean temperatures and daily life in East Africa.
