Lugave Clan Triumphs in UK/Ireland Luganda Reading Competition

The Lugave clan has emerged victorious in a keenly contested Luganda reading competition, an event designed to foster linguistic and cultural preservation among the Baganda diaspora in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

The virtual competition, which took place over Zoom, saw over 100 participants engage in the spirited contest. The event garnered attention from high-ranking officials, including the Second Deputy Katikkiro of Buganda, Robert Waggwa Nsibirwa, who expressed his admiration for the diaspora’s commitment.

Nsibirwa lauded the participants for their dedication to maintaining their cultural roots and promoting their heritage, even while living far from their ancestral land. He highlighted the competition as a testament to the enduring spirit of Buganda and a powerful symbol of the diaspora’s passion for preserving their identity.

He further emphasized that such initiatives are crucial for connecting individuals living abroad with their language and culture, while also encouraging others to deepen their understanding of their homeland through shared stories and discussions. Nsibirwa also urged the organizers to broaden the scope of the competition in the future, inviting participation from Baganda living in other countries to further expand its reach and impact.

The competition, chaired by Buganda’s Representative in the UK and Ireland, Ssaalongo Geoffrey Kibuuka, saw four clans reach the final round: Olulyo Olulangira, Eŋŋonge, Ffumbe, and the eventual winners, Olugave. This initiative is part of a larger effort by Baganda communities abroad to ensure that Luganda, Buganda’s culture, and identity are passed on to current and future generations.
