Le Fee's Penalty Earns Sunderland a Draw at Brentford

Sunderland secured a hard-fought draw away at Brentford thanks to a late penalty from Enzo le Fee. The French midfielder calmly dispatched the spot-kick in the 82nd minute, sending goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher the wrong way. This came after defender Keane Lewis-Potter was adjudged to have held substitute Wilson Isidor in the penalty area.

Brentford had taken the lead in the second half through a well-taken goal by Vitaly Janelt. The German midfielder found the net in the 57th minute, cutting across a cross from Mikkel Damsgaard to send a shot spinning into the top corner. This goal came after Brentford had introduced three substitutes at halftime, seemingly to address a first-half performance where Sunderland had dominated possession.

Sunderland had started brightly and even had the ball in the net through Dan Ballard in the first half. However, a lengthy VAR review ruled the goal out for offside, with new signing Kevin Danso deemed to be obstructing the goalkeeper’s view. Le Fee himself came close to scoring in the first half, striking the post with a powerful shot, as Sunderland failed to convert their first-half dominance into goals.

Despite Brentford’s second-half resurgence and taking the lead, they couldn’t hold on. The late penalty from Le Fee, who had missed a ‘Panenka’ in a previous fixture against Brentford, ensures Sunderland avoid a second defeat of the season. The draw maintains Brentford’s unbeaten start to the season, though they have now dropped points from winning positions in consecutive games.
