UN Adopts New World Map to Correct Size Distortions, Highlighting Africa

The traditional world map, based on the 16th-century Mercator projection, has long faced criticism for its inaccurate portrayal of continental sizes, particularly minimizing Africa. This projection, created to aid European navigators, distorts areas further from the equator, making continents like Africa appear smaller than they are relative to regions near the poles.

For instance, the Mercator map famously depicts Africa as roughly the same size as Greenland, when in reality, Africa is approximately 14 times larger. Critics argue that such distortions can downplay the development potential and significance of equatorial nations.

In response to these inaccuracies, cartographers developed the Equal Earth projection in 2018. This alternative map aims to provide a more equitable representation of global landmasses. The African Union officially adopted the Equal Earth projection in February, endorsing it as a more accurate depiction of all continents, with a special emphasis on Africa’s true scale.

Togo’s Foreign Minister, Robert Dussey, a key proponent of the resolution, emphasized the importance of accurate representation, stating, “A fair world begins with a fair map.” He further noted that maps are not neutral, as they shape perceptions and influence understanding of global hierarchies.

The UN General Assembly’s vote in favor of adopting this new map, while non-binding, is expected to influence the cartographic standards used by various institutions globally, promoting a more accurate global perspective.
