Thousands Bid Farewell to King Oyo as Remains Return to Tooro

The streets of Tooro were awash with grief and remembrance as the body of the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV made its journey back to the kingdom. Thousands of loyal subjects and mourners lined the Fort Portal-Kampala highway, braving the midday sun to honor their monarch.

King Oyo, who passed away in Dallas, United States, last Thursday, was repatriated to Uganda, marking the beginning of the kingdom’s preparations for his final rites. His remains arrived at Humura Playground in Kyegegwa by helicopter before being placed in a hearse to commence the procession towards Fort Portal.

As early as 10 am, crowds had begun to gather, with many walking from Kyegegwa town to join the solemn procession. Along the route, trading centers, boda boda stages, and roadsides became impromptu viewing spots, as people eagerly awaited a glimpse of the cortege. Businesses in areas like Kyenjojo town temporarily closed, adding to the somber atmosphere.

Mourners, some holding posters of the late king, others simply standing in quiet reverence, paid tribute to King Oyo’s decades-long reign. Leaders spoke of his dedication to Tooro, urging the populace to uphold the kingdom’s cherished customs and traditions.

For many, this was a final opportunity to publicly acknowledge a king who ascended the throne at the tender age of three and reigned for 31 years, becoming one of Uganda’s longest-serving traditional rulers. The procession’s journey was managed by police and UPDF personnel to ensure the safety and order of the vast crowds.

King Oyo’s remains will lie in state at Karuzika Royal Palace in Fort Portal until Saturday, September 12, when he will be laid to rest at the Karambi Royal Tombs.
