Nebbi District Urged to Offer Free Office Space to Persons with Disabilities

Humanity & Inclusion has appealed to Nebbi District authorities to allocate free office space for organizations representing persons with disabilities. The organization argues that the current expenditure on rent by groups like the Nebbi Women with Disability Association (NEWDA) diverts crucial funds that could otherwise support vital community development initiatives.

Bernard Mugenzomwe, a Project Officer at Humanity & Inclusion, highlighted that under the PROTECT-SRHR project, some funding designated for NEWDA’s inclusion activities is being consumed by rent. He posed the question to the district leadership: “Can the district allocate an office space for NEWDA so that the money they would be paying for rent is channelled into the community?”

An office situated within the district headquarters would not only offer financial relief but also enhance accessibility for persons with disabilities. Mugenzomwe emphasized that such a location would provide a central hub for coordination and improve their ability to engage with district leaders and access government opportunities.

Nebbi District LC V Chairperson George Othuba acknowledged the request, stating the district could potentially provide a small space. However, he stressed the need for disability groups to collaborate effectively to maximize the use of such facilities and opportunities. Othuba also indicated a plan to convene a meeting to help harmonize the efforts of various disability associations.

The proposal is currently under consideration by the Nebbi District leadership, with the hope that a favorable decision will empower local disability advocacy and development programs.
