The Chairperson of the Committee on Public Service, Herbert Edmond Ariko, has emphasized the critical need for Parliament to strengthen its oversight mechanisms for flagship government programs. Speaking at a two-day induction training for committee members, Ariko highlighted that robust oversight is essential to ensure these initiatives effectively benefit citizens.

Ariko specifically pointed to the Parish Development Model (PDM) as a central government effort aimed at fostering inclusive economic growth, boosting household incomes, and driving community transformation. He argued that Parliament’s role in oversight must extend beyond merely reviewing policies and official pronouncements.

Instead, he urged MPs to actively investigate whether these programs are achieving their intended outcomes on the ground. This includes verifying that program guidelines are clearly disseminated and understood, that funds are reaching their intended recipients, and that government interventions are yielding the promised results across all regions of Uganda.

The committee chairperson concluded by stating that diligent and effective oversight is paramount to ensuring that public resources are utilized efficiently and lead to demonstrable improvements in the quality of life for Ugandans.
