Leon Black Sues Congressional Panel Over Epstein Subpoenas

Billionaire investor Leon Black has taken legal action against the House Oversight Committee, filing a lawsuit that challenges the legitimacy of subpoenas demanding his testimony and financial documents related to his association with the late Jeffrey Epstein.

Black, who previously walked out of a voluntary testimony session with the committee in June, argues that the subpoenas are “invalid” and “hold no legitimate connection” to the committee’s stated legislative aims. The lawsuit, filed in federal court, specifically targets the committee’s demand for nondisclosure agreements (NDAs) that Black may have signed.

Attorneys for Black assert that the disclosure of these NDAs could potentially expose individuals, particularly women, who have no public connection to Epstein and who bargained for confidentiality. “This is no longer about finding the truth about Epstein. It is about trying to destroy Mr Black,” stated Susan Estrich, an attorney for Black, describing the lawsuit as a response to an “abuse of Congressional power.”

Committee members, however, have expressed frustration with Black’s stance. Robert Garcia, a member of the committee, stated that Black is “defying two Congressional subpoenas” and that his “unwillingness to cooperate are unacceptable.” Chairman James Comer echoed this sentiment, saying, “It’s a shame Leon Black is hiding behind litigation rather than provide answers to the American people.”

Black has previously stated that he employed Epstein as a wealth management adviser and paid him substantial sums for legitimate services. He maintains he was unaware of Epstein’s illicit activities until Epstein’s arrest in 2019. Black’s association with Epstein has been under scrutiny, particularly following the release of Epstein’s files by the Justice Department, though his mere appearance in these documents does not imply wrongdoing. The controversy has had significant personal and professional repercussions for Black, including his departure from Apollo Global Management in 2021.
