Katuntu Urges Legal Committee to Shun Gossip and Factions

Former Bugweri County MP Abdu Katuntu has issued a stern warning to members of the Parliamentary Committee on Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, urging them to steer clear of gossip and the formation of internal factions. Katuntu highlighted that such divisive behaviors significantly undermine teamwork and ultimately weaken the committee’s ability to function effectively.

Speaking at a two-day induction training for the committee members in Munyonyo, Katuntu, a former chair of Parliament’s Rules Committee, underscored the critical importance of the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee. He noted that due to the sensitive and often controversial nature of the matters it handles, the committee is considered one of Parliament’s most vital.

“One of the biggest challenges is gossip and forming camps within committees. Chairpersons, Vice Chairpersons and members should desist from this practice because it undermines teamwork and kills the effectiveness of the committee,” Katuntu stated.

He implored the legislators to consistently uphold the rule of law, fairness, and constitutionalism in their deliberations. “You are the most important committee of Parliament. Because of the controversial nature of the business you handle, you must always stand for the rule of law, fairness and constitutionalism,” he added.

Echoing these concerns, former Erute South MP Jonathan Odur also advised the committee members to be vigilant against external influences. He warned that various entities might attempt to compromise their integrity and urged them to remain firm and independent.

The induction aims to equip the committee members with the necessary knowledge and skills for their legislative and oversight responsibilities in the new Parliament. Facilitators also addressed procedural matters and cautioned against hidden agendas that could disrupt the committee’s work.
