The Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) Uganda is set to host its inaugural “Open Days” exhibition, an event designed to showcase the vibrant businesses and skills developed by refugees and members of host communities.
The two-day event will take place at the JRS offices in Nsambya, Kampala, on September 25 and 26, 2026. It aims to connect refugee entrepreneurs and vocational trainees with a wider audience, including potential customers, businesses, and development partners.
Visitors will have the opportunity to see a diverse range of products and skills on display. These include creations in fashion and design, arts and crafts, and culinary arts, featuring African cuisine. The exhibition will also include live demonstrations from current trainees and presentations from former trainees who have successfully launched their own businesses.
Beyond showcasing talents, the Open Days intend to foster crucial connections. The event provides a platform for refugee entrepreneurs to engage with financial institutions, private companies, educational bodies, NGOs, and development partners, potentially opening doors to new opportunities and collaborations.
Ami-Adolphe Mudekereza, JRS Communications Officer for Eastern and Southern Africa, expressed that the initiative will provide insight into JRS’s work with displaced populations. “We want the Open Day to help people better understand who we are, what we do and the difference our programmes make,” Mudekereza stated, adding that it will highlight the resilience and talent of refugees and host communities.
This exhibition is part of JRS’s broader strategy to support refugees beyond immediate humanitarian aid, focusing on pathways to employment, entrepreneurship, and socioeconomic integration. JRS Uganda has been operational since 1993, providing a range of services including education, livelihoods support, and psychosocial assistance.
The event is free and open to the public, with activities running from 9 am to 5 pm on the 25th and from 11 am to 5 pm on the 26th.
