Government Outlines Comprehensive Burial Plans for Late Toro King Oyo

The Ugandan government is coordinating a comprehensive state funeral for the late Omukama of Toro, Rukirabasaija Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. The monarch passed away in the United States on August 28, 2026, after a 30-year reign.

Minister for the Presidency, Milly Babalanda, announced that the Cabinet has directed Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja to oversee a whole-of-government approach for the burial. This decision follows a Cabinet tribute recognizing the late king’s significant contributions to the socio-economic development of the Toro region.

Parliament also paid its respects, debating the King’s impact on the region. An inter-ministerial committee, including representatives from the Toro royal family, has been formed to ensure a dignified send-off.

The remains of King Oyo were tentatively scheduled for repatriation to Uganda on September 3, 2026, arriving at Entebbe International Airport. The government is covering the costs of repatriation, including medical bills and transportation from Dallas.

Government support will be concentrated at five key locations: Entebbe International Airport for the arrival of the remains, Karuzika Royal Palace in Toro for mourners, Waziga Royal Residency in Kampala, Karambi Royal Tombs for interment, and St. John’s Cathedral for the burial service.

Logistical support includes providing tents, chairs, cleaning services, and public address systems. The Ministry of Defence, through the UPDF, is also providing food for mourners. Funeral expenses, such as casket preparation, grave preparation, and mausoleum construction, are being covered by the government.

Security, crowd control, and ceremonial functions will be managed by the UPDF and Uganda Police Force, who will provide bands, bearers, and guard salutes. Renovations at Karuzika Royal Palace are underway by UPDF Engineers.

The extensive preparations aim to ensure a befitting farewell for the monarch, acknowledging his national significance and the expected attendance of dignitaries and royal delegations from across Africa. President Yoweri Museveni has allocated the necessary resources through State House to facilitate these arrangements.
