President Javier Milei of Argentina has escalated tensions with the UK by vowing to implement economic sanctions against firms pursuing oil exploitation in waters close to the Falkland Islands. In a national address, Milei asserted that “winds of change” favor Argentina’s claim to the islands, suggesting that the United States might be reconsidering its neutral stance on the issue.
The Sea Lion oilfield, where British and Israeli companies are preparing for exploration, was specifically identified by Milei as a “clear and present danger.” He stated that if Argentina does not act swiftly, these companies will soon have the capacity to extract oil from waters that Argentina considers its own.
This announcement comes amidst ongoing debate over the sovereignty of the archipelago, a conflict that led to a war between Argentina and the UK over 40 years ago. Milei reiterated that the Falklands are “historically and legally” Argentinean, although the exact scope and implementation of the proposed sanctions remain unclear. Current Argentine law does permit restrictions on companies involved in projects deemed unauthorized on the islands.
Downing Street has firmly responded, stating that the right to self-determination for Falkland Islanders includes the right to exploit their own natural resources. They maintain that the islands will remain a British Overseas Territory as long as the inhabitants wish, referencing the overwhelming 2013 referendum where residents voted to retain their status.
Milei’s actions are seen by some analysts as partly driven by domestic political considerations, aiming to bolster his popularity ahead of upcoming elections. The focus on oil exploration provides a concrete issue to rally support around, potentially deflecting criticism regarding his handling of the sovereignty dispute.
The UK’s Defence Secretary, Wes Streeting, characterized Milei’s statement as more reflective of Argentine domestic politics than the Falklands issue itself, emphasizing Britain’s “absolute and unshakeable” commitment to the islands. Both companies involved in the exploration project have been contacted for comment.
