Parliament Honors Omukama Oyo as a Visionary Leader

Members of Parliament have lauded the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV for his significant contributions to the Tooro Kingdom and Uganda at large. During a special sitting, the Parliament moved a motion to honor the monarch, who was remembered for embodying unity, cultural continuity, and progressive leadership.
Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja commended Omukama Oyo’s dedication to the education sector through the King Oyo Foundation, which provided scholarships to numerous underprivileged youth. She also praised his efforts in reviving agriculture within the kingdom and his support for government initiatives in child health and nutrition.
Omukama Oyo was recognized for his role as a youth advocate against HIV/AIDS, a position he held with UNAIDS. His advocacy focused on prevention, eliminating mother-to-child transmission, and engaging men and boys in the response.
Furthermore, his commitment to environmental conservation was highlighted through a campaign to plant over 10 million trees and efforts to protect the River Mpanga. As a global tourism ambassador, Omukama Oyo showcased Uganda’s potential by climbing the Rwenzori Mountains and tracking mountain gorillas.
The Leader of the Opposition, through Hon. Patrick Oshabe, noted how the late Omukama harmonized his cultural responsibilities with his Christian faith, demonstrating that tradition and modern beliefs could coexist. MPs also recalled his advocacy for preventive healthcare and safeguarding citizens against non-communicable diseases, proposing the establishment of a King Oyo Nyimba Cancer Institute.
His passion for children was evident in his fundraising drive for a children’s hospital, a project Members of Parliament urged the government to continue. Contributions to infrastructure, such as donating land for the Buhinga Football Stadium, and efforts to revive cultural tourism sites were also acknowledged.
The Parliament also extended gratitude to the regents and President Museveni for nurturing Omukama Oyo’s leadership journey. The late monarch is slated to be laid to rest on September 12, 2026, coinciding with his coronation anniversary.
